Melatonin is a messenger substance that is produced in the brain. It plays an important role in regulating the sleep-wake rhythm. Taking melatonin as a dietary supplement can help shorten the time it takes to fall asleep and alleviate the subjective symptoms of jet lag. The positive effect on jet lag occurs when at least 0.5 mg is taken on the first day of travel shortly before going to bed and on the first days after arrival at the destination.
